After the Beginning of Winter, adverse weather conditions gradually increase, posing great challenges to the safety and smoothness of road traffic operations. Thick fog reduces visibility drastically; continuous rain and snow make the road surface extremely slippery; the arrival of low temperatures leads to frequent occurrences of road icing and frost, sharply decreasing the friction coefficient and creating numerous potential hazards for traffic accidents. Although road meteorological stations and atmospheric visibility meters are equipped during highway construction, which can obtain some meteorological information, there has always been a lack of suitable monitoring solutions for road surface-specific meteorological features such as waterlogging, snow accumulation, icing, and high temperatures on the road surface.
The emergence of the Road condition sensor has filled this gap. Also known as a pavement condition detector or a remote sensing pavement sensor, it is designed using spectral analysis technology. The sensor has a built-in light source that emits monochromatic light of a single wavelength. Through the focusing of a lens, the light is precisely projected onto the road surface. Due to the different materials and actual conditions of the road surface, there are differences in the intensity and spectral characteristics of the reflected light.
The spectral receiving device within the sensor will meticulously measure the intensity and wavelength of the reflected light. Once the internal processing unit obtains the data, it immediately starts the analysis and calculation work. Eventually, it can accurately output the analysis results of the road surface conditions, precisely determining whether there is icing, snow accumulation, or waterlogging on the road surface and measuring their thicknesses as well. With this precise monitoring, traffic departments can deploy countermeasures in advance to fully ensure the safety of road traffic.
