Measuring visibility is crucial for ensuring traffic safety, especially in fields such as highways, railways, aviation, and shipping. Low visibility significantly increases the risk of accidents. Visibility data is very important for improving the accuracy of weather forecasts, conducting climate research, monitoring air quality, protecting public health, and responding to emergencies. In aspects such as agricultural planning, the energy industry, tourism and leisure activities, military operations, and urban planning, the measurement of visibility also plays a key role.
A visibility monitor usually refers to a forward scattering visibility meter, which consists of hardware and software. The hardware is divided into three parts: sensor, collector, and peripheral equipment. The attenuation of light in the atmosphere is mainly caused by scattering. This instrument obtains the scattering coefficient by measuring the intensity of forward scattered light in the atmosphere, and then estimates the extinction coefficient to determine the meteorological optical range.
Its on-site calibration period is 6 months. Stations can appropriately adjust the calibration time. Calibration is also required after initial installation and maintenance. It should be carried out in good visibility (over 500m), with low wind speed, in non-rainy and snowy weather and under bright sunlight. The calibration period should avoid the data acquisition time at the full hour.
National ground meteorological observation stations need to conduct equipment calibration registration in the "equipment management" of the ISOS software when calibrating. During the calibration period, the automatic observation data of visibility is treated as missing. Before conducting on-site detection and calibration work, use professional tools to clean the lens, check the light shield and diffusion plate to ensure that there is no damage, wear, and the equipment is operating normally.
